Orbita Wall Safe

Review by Dr. Peter Helton
February 24, 2009

Upon receiving the Orbita Wall Safe, I was excited.  It comes well packaged free from possible dents during shipping. Upon unwrapping, I noticed it came already assembled with batteries in place and they are guaranteed to last 5 years.  Installation was fairly easy between standard 16" wall studs, as long as you have an appropriately thick wall to contain its 7.5" depth.

The safe securely attaches to studs very stoutly. The safe door is securely locked with a 1/4 inch steel rod, holding the door closed. If a thief were to try and break in,  they would need tools.  It cannot be done with bare hands. Additional deterrents include a pre-wired tamper alerting mechanism that can be easily added to a home security system, alarming when the safe door is opened. However, this safe's true forte is of the hidden variety.  Since it only projects out 3/4"  from the wall; it is of a perfect size to place behind a painting.  So, if thieves cannot find the safe, then the watches are safer. It would also be ideal for a custom walk in closet application.  Color, quality, workmanship are all outstanding and appropriate to this caliber of winder.

It is truly a joy to go to the Wall Safe each morning and decide which time piece to wear.  Opening the safe reveals a large luxurious suede-like padded shelf,  ideal for placing the watches on while switching them out.  Matching suede winder panel complements the interior.  Extra shelf space at the bottom is a plus for your significant other's jewelry. When using the safe at night, I was delighted to see two tiny LED lights illuminating the enclosed watches.  Not bright enough to notice during the day, but are perfect for an evening application if you did not want to turn on the light in the room. The safe and the lights operate on an internal 9v transistor battery.  In case the internal operating battery dies with the safe in a locked position, there is a clever external jumper that lies beneath a hidden cap that can be used to jump the dead battery.  An extra 9v battery is also supplied.

In actual use the ingenious Sparta Rotorwind mechanism kept a variety of Rolex, Richard Mille, Panerai and Sinn watches all appropriately wound. This winder is a pleasure to own and has been my favorite winder so far. I would recommend it without reservation for someone looking for a wall mounted winder.
